Workshops Help County Homeowners Struggling With Foreclosure

Help is within reach for struggling homeowners grappling with the rising cost of adjustable rate mortgages and the fear of foreclosure.

Prince George’s officials are encouraging residents with housing troubles to attend one of the weekly workshops held each Thursday at 7 pm at various locations throughout the county.

Housing Struggling homeowners can find help.

A recent workshop sponsored by the county’s department of housing and community development and Howard University’s WHUR 96.3 FM Radio drew more than 200 people to Reid Temple AME Church in Glen Dale.

Titled the “Protect Your Dream Seminar,” the gathering featured one-on-one counseling for homeowners.

Attendees were told to immediately contact their lenders, understand their mortgage rights and become educated on the foreclosure process. Homeowners who have missed one or more mortgage payments should compile their closing documents and contact a HUD certified housing counseling agency.

Such agencies can be located on the Maryland Department of Housing's website at www.mdhousing.org or the HUD website at www.hud.gov. The event also focused on prioritizing debt, and being aware of predatory lending schemes.

The workshop’s counselors were provided by the Coalition for Home Ownership Preservation in Prince George's County, which includes state and local government as well as non-profit housing counseling agencies.
