Golfer Turned Sports Reporter Gets Will Compete In 2008 Melwood Prince George's County Open

Bobby Clampett, a former fixture on the PGA pro circuit and current television broadcaster, has accepted a sponsor's exemption to compete in the Melwood Prince George's County Open returning to the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville on May 19 to 25.

Clampett was a regular on the PGA Tour from 1980 to 1995 and earned over $1 million during that time. His best finish came in 1981, when he was 17th in earnings. He won the 1982 Southern Open and in 1984 was the youngest player to earn more than $500,000.

Originally from California, Clampett joined CBS Sports in 1991 as a course reporter for the network's broadcast of the PGA Championship. He is now a full-time member of the CBS golf team, following his retirement from the PGA Tour in 1995. He plans to compete on the Champions Tour when he turns 50 in 2010.

Going into its second year, the Melwood Prince George's County Open features 156 professional golfers competing for a $650,000 purse with the champion collecting $117,000.

The tournament is more than a golf game and features play by high school students, a junior clinic, multiple Pro-Am events, a private sponsor's party at Six Flags America, and various social events.

The open also benefits Melwood and the Melwood Horticultural Training Center, a nonprofit serving more than 2,100 people with disabilities through job training, employment, housing and recreation in the Washington D.C. region.
