Built in 1783, the mansion was one of the first of its kind in Prince George's. Visitors are invited to walk through the estate’s flower and herb garden, play hide-and-seek in a boxwood maze and enjoy old-fashioned toys. There will also be opportunities to dress up in colonial style clothes.

The mansion is considered a national historic landmark and is operated as a house museum and rental space. Certain rooms have been researched and outfitted in furnishings that mimic decorations from the end of the 18th Century.

Throughout the year, the Montpelier staff offers tours, concerts, festivals, re-enactments, exhibits, lectures, and seminars. Also, teas are offered periodically. The mansion is also available for weddings, receptions, luncheons, and meetings.

Holly Burnham, director of education for the mansion, said its history dates back to Richard Snowden, an indentured servant from the British Aisles who came to the colony of Maryland in the 1600s. The family soon became involved in iron works.

“By the time the house was built the family had done very well for itself,” Burnham said. “It is a success story of how Maryland prospered.”

The family-fun activities at Montpelier Mansion are free and will be held on Thursday, June 26 from 6-8 pm, and Sunday, June 29 from 3-5 pm. The mansion is located at 9650 Muirkirk Road, Laurel, MD 20708.
