County Learning Center Gets $40K Infusion For New Playground

The conclusion of ASRC Federal Holding Co.’s first charity golf tournament produced more than a winner; the effort spawned a $40,000 donation to the Judy Hoyer Family Learning Center in Adelphi. The funds will be used to build a new playground.

The learning center, which is part of Prince George’s County Public Schools, has been an asset to children in the Adelphi and Cool Spring elementary school communities, offering special education and Head Start classes for children under five. The center’s other services include family literacy programs, parent education, nutrition education and health care referrals.

“We are very appreciative of the generous donation from ASRC Federal, and are thrilled that they are planning to continue their partnership through employee volunteer work at the Judy Center,” said Superintendent of Schools John E. Deasy in a recent statement. “Through their donation, the center will receive a new playground in one year that otherwise would have taken four years to construct, and their ongoing volunteer support will directly help families in their community.”

As school districts across the country grapple with the increasing costs of delivering education to students, school officials in the county say public private collaborations, like the relationship with ASRC Federal, become more important. Prince George’s public schools said it has expanded efforts to recruit business partners to match the needs of its schools.

“Our formal business partnerships develop reciprocal relationships between businesses and schools,” said Yvette Caldwell, business partnerships specialist, in a recent statement. “Businesses can satisfy their need to be good corporate citizens and students can gain access to potential career pathways, internships, and mentoring opportunities.”

ASRC Federal of Greenbelt gives support to a range of federal agencies in engineering, operations and maintenance, and information technology.
