
Bowie State University said Roosevelt Newson has been selected to become the next provost and vice president for academic affairs.
“Newson’s track record shows a commitment to enhancing student learning and to increasing student opportunities for success,” said Bowie State President Mickey L. Burnim, in a recent statement.

Newson held the same position at the University of North Alabama, where he also served as vice president for University Programs.
The university said he’s slated to begin on to Sept. 1 and will oversee academic deans and program directors. He’ll also be responsible for providing leadership in strategic planning and collaborating with constituencies in and outside the university.
While at the University of North Alabama, Newson had also served as the dean of the college of fine arts and a professor of music at Illinois State University. He also served as dean of the college of liberal arts and social sciences at Georgia Southern University and as an associate dean of the college of arts and sciences at Bloomsburg University.
In addition to his academic career, he’s also a concert pianist debuting at Wigmore Hall in London. Newson also performed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Baltimore Summer Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Philharmonic and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic. Early in his career Newson was a featured artist in BSU’s Performing Arts Series.
