If there was an Ice Cream Hall of Fame, there are some sure bets on inductees from classic brands like Häagen-Dazs and Ben and Jerry’s, but right here in our own back yard, the University of Maryland is laying claim to making some of the best ice cream around.
Drop by The Dairy on Route 1 in College Park to sample its Fear the Turtle flavor, which boasts white chocolate ice cream swirled with caramel and pecans. Or get a few scoops of Final Exam Cram - a concoction of rich cappuccino ice cream and crushed chocolate cookies.
Besides the university’s well-known tradition of rigorous scholarship and competitive sports teams, it’s been churning out ice cream for more than 80 years.
For a time, the tasty frozen treats were made by the dairy science folks in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, but recently the duty has fallen to bakery staff at the university’s dining services department.
The university’s ice cream brand features 28 flavors and produces over 25,000 gallons a year.
Everyone can sample the university’s unique ice cream treats at The Dairy, which is open for business weekdays from 11am to 4pm.
The Dairy is located along Route 1 in College Park near the campus visitors center.
