Swine Flu Hits Closer to Home, Forces School Closings

Students at University Park Elementary School in Hyattsville are getting some extra time off, courtesy of the swine flu outbreak. Starting Monday, the school’s doors will be shuttered for the next 14 days; it’s the latest school to close in Maryland due to concerns over the spread of the H1N1 virus.

It’s been reported that 15 probable swine flu cases have been discovered in the state according to Frances Phillips, DHMH deputy secretary for public health.

Health officials advise the following habits to keep from getting sick:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
