The Newest Angel
Farrah Fawcett Dies After Her Battle with Cancer But Leaves An Enormous
Legacy for Women and Triumph of the Human Spirit
A beautiful soul behind the beautiful smile
It was Farrah’s willingness to fight that will be remembered as the best of her.
On and offstage, she fought. She had our attention with her beauty, her charm
and, of course, her hair. But it was her willingness to tell the stories of
those who could not speak for themselves that we will remember.
Fawcett's work in projects like “The Burning Bed” and “Extremities” were what
got the attention of the rest us – those who were not pubescent boys or middle
age crisis-centered men. We saw the beauty and power in a woman not satisfied
with simply trading in on her physical appearance. Fawcett fueled her legacy on
her commitment to her craft and became to a certain degree, a spokeswoman for a
larger, broader message: fight for your place in this world.
A popular image of athletic Farrah in the '70s
And that she did. Anyone remotely familiar with Charlie's former angel knows
that off camera, Fawcett stood her ground in the face of terminal cancer for
several years before succumbing to the disease. Forced into a public battle with
the disease, Farrah’s lawsuit aimed at protecting the privacy (medical records)
of high-profile patients will go far in protecting others who will walk similar
paths. It's an act that defines her strength and now part of her legacy.
Through more than most could bear, Farrah carried herself with courage and
grace in the face of the battle of her life. She may be a ‘70s icon but she was
far more than a tv series and a pin up poster. Her greatest role was played off
camera and we can never thank her enough for it.
