Brooks has spent the last eight years as assistant coach of the men’s basketball team at George Washington University. While there, he became known as a detailed-oriented leader, who could dissect the game, craft intelligent strategies and get the squad ready to play.
"Coach Brooks was a main reason for the team having the success it had over the past four years, said former GW forward and current Washington Wizard Mike Hall on GWsports.com. “Coach Brooks was responsible for making sure the guys knew their assignments, kept the guys motivated and made sure we achieved our potential throughout our careers. He can relate to the players very well and he taught me a lot about becoming a better basketball player and becoming a better person as well and I thank him for that."
University President Mickey L. Burnim said, “We are excited to have Darrell Brooks as Bowie State’s new head coach of our men’s basketball team and we look forward to his leadership and to generating a new level of success among the team members.”
Before his stint at George Washington, Brooks spent the 2000-2001 season as the head coach at Western Maryland College . Under Brooks, WMC ranked among the top three teams in the Centennial Conference in scoring, assists, three-pointers made and steals.
Brooks and his wife, Sandra, live in Randallstown. His daughter, Kiana, has two children, Aalyiah, 14 and Alexis, 12. His son, D.J., 24, is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta.
