PGCC’s Olomo Wins $30K Scholarship, Will Attend Johns Hopkins

Need proof that hard work pays off? Meet Promise Olomo. The Prince George's Community College student received the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship worth $30,000 per year.

The scholarship rewards academic excellence by supporting outstanding community college students with financial need to transfer to and complete their bachelor’s degrees at the nation’s top four-year colleges and universities.

PGCC said Olomo will transfer to Johns Hopkins University where he will continue his education in the nursing program.

“The awarding of the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship to Promise Olomo could not have happened to a more deserving individual,” said PGCC President Charlene M. Dukes. “His personal and professional journeys are amazing and not one that many could have endured.”

A brief look at Olomo’s academic and community service efforts reflect his commitment to his studies and community service. Olomo is president of the Phi Theta Kappa, Tau Pi Chapter, member of the Honors Program and Honors Academy, awardee of the Citation in Honors, and pioneer member of the Hillman Entrepreneurs Scholarship Program 2007.

In 2008, Olomo was selected from nearly 1,600 nominations for the All-USA Academic First Team for Community and Junior Colleges. The prestigious All-USA Academic First Team is sponsored by USA Today, the American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa. As part of the First Team, he was featured in USA Today, awarded $2,500 and was recognized by AACC last year during its annual convention in Philadelphia.

Olomo also puts in time on a number of committees, including the Nursing Pinning Ceremony, Student Governance Board President Selection and 50th Anniversary Celebration. Olomo also contributes to the college and the community by volunteering for Christmas-in-April, Walk Now for Autism, and the Children’s Book Drive.

“Promise is committed to serving humankind and using his gifts to pay it forward,” said Dukes. “I am proud to know him and to call him a son of Prince George's Community College; he represents the best of what the 40,000 individuals enrolled at the college have to offer the county, the region and the world.”

Olomo, who resides in Forestville, is in the process of establishing the Promise Scholarship, a student-to-student scholarship that provides assistance based on financial need.
