The Prince George’s County Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its first Political Candidate Meet-N-Greet November 13, which gave many of the candidates seeking office in 2010 a forum to offer their views on the pressing issues of the moment.
Residents from across the county came out to mix and mingle inside the Prince George’s Ballroom in Landover, as candidates discussed their plans if given the chance to hold office. More than 30 office seekers attended the event; each with a gaggle of supporters handling out flyers to aid their cause.
Many of the candidates were concerned about similar issues, including violence in the area. “I plan to fight to ensure gangs out of schools, violence out of the community and predators off the streets,” said State’s Attorney candidate Angela D. Alsobrooks. Candidates were also concerned about the lack of jobs. “I am a visionary leader who gets results,” said County Council District 9 candidate Tamara Davis Brown. “I plan to bring more federal jobs to P.G. County.” Other issues discussed throughout the night included, education, transportation, senior citizens and the county’s youth.”
Everyone who gave a speech said the county can be an even better place to live and raise families. “Anything can happen in P.G. County,” said State Senator Doug Peters. Delegate Aisha N. Braveboy, who represents the 25th District, has yet to decide if she will announce a candidacy for 2010, but stood ready to make a contribution to Prince George’s. “Whatever I do in 2010, I’ll do it to the best of my ability for the county that I love,” she said.
The Delta’s were excited that so many people attended the event and wanted to learn about the politicians on the 2010 ballot. “This is the first time we’ve had a meet the candidates,” said Jeannette Cleveland, a member of the sorority. “This gives the residents of the county the opportunity to come out and hear what the candidates have to offer.”
Terri Reaves, chairperson of the sorority’s Social Action Committee, added “I am ecstatic with the turnout. Prince George’s has so much leadership potential and it is wonderful to see the candidates stepping up to the plate. It was amazing in 2008 to see Obama elected into office, so we must keep the momentum going and this is a great way to do so.”
