Mount Rainier Turns 100
Mild temperatures and clear skies embraced Mount Rainier as the trolley car suburb breached the 100-year mark on Jan 23 with a kick off event recognizing the centennial history of the town. Mayor Malinda Miles and Vice Mayor Bryan Knedler ushered in the start of a year-long celebration that will truly begin in April.
Other officials such as State Senator David C. Harrington (D-47 District) and Councilman Will Campos (D-2nd District), among others, were also on hand along with some 200 others to celebrate the city’s milestone.
While 2010 will certainly bring a healthy dose of reflection on Mount Rainier’s rich history, the city hasn’t stood still. Mount Rainier is currently on the upswing with a bourgeoning arts community, where a large swath of the city has been slated for revitalization through the development of arts and entertainment-themed businesses.
As the city grows, its population has become more diverse. More than three quarters of residents are African-American and Caucasian, with a growing number of Hispanics. Young couples just starting out have been drawn to the city’s attractively priced housing stock with ample yards and easy access to major roadways.
