District 9 Council Member Sydney Harrison, in partnership with the County’s Summer Youth
Enrichment Program (SYEP), and the Prince George’s County Office of Community Relations, hosted a Summer Youth Employment Sign-Up event at Frederick Douglass High School Jan. 25. As young people in District 9 applied for summer employment, Harrison praised the vision of County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks and the work of the Summer Youth Enrichment Program, Office of Community Relations, and Office of Human Resources Management, to provide this important opportunity for the County’s youth.

In 2019, SYEP celebrated many successes including receiving more than 10,000 applications, doubling the number of jobs from 3,000 to more than 6,000 and nearly doubling the number of employers participating in the program from 126 to 250. This year the commitment continues as the 2020 program strives for bigger numbers in youth employment seekers, and new employers coming to the table with job offers.

In a 2019 online article by Prince George’s Suite Magazine, SYEP teamed up with Prince George’s Community College Culinary Arts Center to give young adults a look into and a taste of the culinary and hospitality industries. see Food, Family & The Future

Self-Worth, Self-Esteem, Confidence, a Strong Work Ethic, and Pride are just a few of the intangible benefits young people will realize beginning training and/or employment at a young age. Of course it is also nice to have some hard earned cash in your pocket as well.
