A Unique Ministry is Launched
Senior Pastor Bill Russell and first lady Sheila Russell hosted their “Live Life…Love Life” motivational and networking social at the Olde Towne Inn restaurant in Upper Marlboro February 4. The event, part worship service, part social mixer and awards ceremony, was held to kick off the couples’ worship ministry. “Our goal for this ministry is to go seven days a week, mentoring, training and building partners rather than members,” said Russell.

Speed Bumps Slow Africa Business Ties
African and African-American business leaders told an Obama Administration official that Marylanders who want to do business in Africa face a number of challenges, but are determined to do business there just the same.
Among the difficulties: overcoming stereotypes, the failure of Americans to grasp the nuances of language and culture, competition from other countries, and the dissemination of incorrect information by the federal government.

Mount Rainier Turns 100
Mild temperatures and clear skies embraced Mount Rainier as the trolley car suburb breached the 100-year mark on Jan 23 with a kick off event recognizing the centennial history of the town. Mayor Malinda Miles and Vice Mayor Bryan Knedler ushered in the start of a year-long celebration that will truly begin in April.

WHUR-FM hosted its Third Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Town Hall Meeting from the First Baptist Church of Glenarden to honor the life and legacy of the civil rights icon on his day of remembrance. “Getting back to King’s basics; I am my brother’s and sister’s keeper” was the motto for the two-hour event aired live on Jan. 18.

Thurgood Marshall to Take the Stage
Real-life judges and politicos are set to bring the life of Thurgood Marshall to the stage at Bowie State University’s Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. inside the Samuel Meyers Auditorium of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Communications Art Center.
Marshall, who died in 1993, is an extraordinary figure in American history. The great grandson of a slave, Marshall was the first African American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
