...From a Grateful County

Since 1971, community leader, city council member, Congresswoman and Senator Barbara A. Mikulski has helped champion her community and state to greater growth and economic stability. After many decades in public office the first female Democrat from Maryland to win a Senate seat and the longest-serving woman senator has retired and turned her seat over to the capable hands of Representative Chris Van Holland.

In an old interview with Time magazine Mikulski said, "In the Senate, I plan to use the good mind, the good mouth, the good heart that God gave me." She has done just that. Mikulski has either sponsored or co-sponsored countless resolutions and amendments during her time on the various committees.

Mikulski has worked tirelessly on women’s issues, including legislation to get breast and cervical cancer screenings and treatment for those who are uninsured. Mikulski authored the Spousal Anti-Impoverishment Act addressing the issue of overwhelming costs of nursing home care for a spouse.

Mikulski sponsored an amendment to H.R. 2577 requiring the Secretary of the VA to provide access to therapeutic listening devices to veterans struggling with mental health related problems, substance abuse or traumatic brain injury. Mikulski sponsored another amendment to H.R. 2577 to provide for safety improvements on transit systems.*

She has been either the sponsor or the supporter of many bills. Her final effort has been in successfully securing $225 million dollars in federal funding for a new, fully consolidated Federal Bureau of Investigations building through the recently-passed Continuing Resolution spending bill. This funding would provide for an FBI headquarters for 11,000 employees. Prince George’s County has two of the final three potential sites-The Greenbelt Metro Station and the form Landover Mall property in Landover.

With a degree in social work, Mikulski turned her love for helping others into a bigger, more encompassing way to help many. The great state of Maryland, its communities, political leaders; the House of Representatives, the Senate all the way to the White House owe a great debt to the little Senator from Highland, East Baltimore. And it is with great thanks that we say farewell to Senator Mikulski.
