This year, on its 15th anniversary, the museum’s Native Art Market is coming to people’s homes. In this virtual program, 15 Native American artists and artisans from earlier Native Art Markets share the stories of their art and new works that reflect this unprecedented time. Through the beauty and solemnity of their creative pieces, these artists, who represent 18 Indigenous communities, encourage people to look forward to a future of healing, good health, and social justice.

Line of Sight refers to the direction in which a person must look in order to see a particular object. This conjunction of ceramic and watercolor works explores the interplay between nearness and distance, drawing out the impact of direction, and perspective on perception. Jennifer Coffin’s ceramic elements present the detail, texture, and immediacy of form experienced in entering a landscape. Rebecca Anderson’s paintings layer the effects of distance and proximity with the sense of atmosphere and space in abstracted landscapes seen from above, close to the water’s edge, through a copse of trees, or from afar.

In this joint exhibition, proximity, vantage point, and aperture transform the viewer’s experience of materials, objects, and landscapes. Coffin’s clay bodies and Anderson’s paintings are formed from foraged and found organic matter and are reconstituted as abstracted landscapes. Dimension and topography emerge from fossilized shells, mineral clay and grapevine charcoal.

Join us for this year’s Black History Month Exhibition entitled, Motivation by Inspiration: A Black History Month Exploration. This year’s collection features African American visual artists from Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, and Kentucky. A diverse group of themes is explored as we travel through conflict, migration, identity, and expression. As we move through themes of pain, we push towards triumph. Each artist finds inspiration through their own exploration of the African American perspective.

Aqcuaetta Williams bases her success on reaching her audience of free thinkers: artists and poets. By doing so, she opens a doorway to images that create emotional agitation and excitement. Her collage paintings are engaging in their technique and expression. Williams presents the viewer with keys to unlock the unconscious mind.

Painter Pamela Crockett uses decomposing pods, dried bulbs, and decaying fragments to inform this series. These delicate remains of life reflect both the fragility and the vitality of the earth. Their patterns of decay echo the invisible forces controlling their movement. For Crocket, even decaying life is active; she believes dead nature lives; therefore, the quiet objects speak.

Be inspired to get involved in your community through community-based art. Various artists and collectives share their works, compassion, and activism. Groups such as FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture and Ben Hamburger’s Facing Change: Narratives of the Shifting Cultural Landscape in East Baltimore display their concerted efforts to give voice to the underrepresented.

Ceramicist and sculptor Jeremy Wright explores the concept of identity within the larger conversation of place, ethnicity, and the interplay between the actual and perceived. Wright challenges the viewer to look beyond what s/he immediately perceives and prompts the viewer to find a more subtle, yet important subtext to the overall conversation. 

The current exhibit in the City Hall Galleries is entitled Small Wonders and includes a variety of pieces from local artists depicting different interpretations of small works and miniatures. The exhibit runs through November 30, 2018. Learn the basic elements of being a good painter using shape, value, line, and color while receiving individualized instruction based on your skill level. Register for this course which may help you reduce stress,and increase your creativity. Call for a materials list prior to class.

Artists fill the streets starting May 6th at First Sunday Arts, the areas premier monthly arts festival to the Annapolis Arts District. The fun starts at 11am on the first Sunday of each month through November as over 130 artists open their displays filled with art to the public in downtown Annapolis, Maryland. The day is also filled with free concerts and entertainment so there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Come see how different artists view the world. Through abstract paintings, three artists — Se Cho, Thomas Dahlberg, and Jodi Ferrier — explore landscapes and their environment with different approaches.

Patrick Cromwell has been a resident artist at Montpelier Arts Center since 2012. After studying art and architecture at Yale in the early 1980s and 1990s, Cromwell took a fifteen-year pause until discovering Montpelier Arts Center’s printmaking classes in 2008. Since then, Cromwell has dedicated his time and talent to printmaking. Cromwell enjoys creating abstract prints that play tricks on the mind and crafting prints inspired by Martha’s Vineyard.

Chris Peregoy photographed Light Modulators, paper sculptures that produce light and shadows, with a variety of large-format cameras and using dry plate collodion and paper negatives. The results are printed with pigment inks in various sizes and are sure to intrigue viewers.

Artist Matt Pinney seeks to represent the systems that inform and classify how we communicate. He looks at the various elements that can shape our understanding of what we see: scientific reasoning, social media, politics, and the divine. These elements are intertwined and presented in the linear perspective of his canvas, allowing the viewer to form their own visual understanding.

Artists Sharon Fishel, Susan Hostetler, and Nancy Sausser investigate the various manifestations of fertility, including the airborne, the interior and the aqueous. In a Fertile World presents their shared interest in the patterns and cycles of the natural world.

Resident artist Steven Williams continues his exploration of two of the 20th century’s major art movements, surrealism and abstractionism. Williams creates mixed-media work using a process of intuition, accident, and chance. His new work focuses on conveying atmosphere while additionally providing a framework for the viewer’s interpretation.
